Stephen Wayne Mitchell, 61, of Lynchburg, went to be with the Lord on August 10, 2017.
Born in Roanoke on May 9, 1956, he was the son of Daphne Gray and Roy Edward Mitchell. Stephen is preceded in death by his father, R. Edward Mitchell. He is survived by his mother, Daphne G. Mitchell; brother, Weldon G. Mitchell; sister, Suzanne J. Mitchell, and sister, Edie M. Swann and her husband Franklin. He is also survived by nieces, Sabrina Weber, Danielle Hunter, and Kaitlin Swann; and nephews, Matthew Mitchell, Allan Mitchell, and Mitchell Swann; as well as great nephew and niece, Mark and Dayna Hunter.
Stephen grew up in Roanoke but spent much of his youth at Smith Mountain Lake where he enjoyed sailing and fishing. He is an alumnus of Cave Spring High School, class of 1974, and later served his country in the US Army. He trained in Fort Leonard Wood, MO, deploying to Nuremberg, Germany and Fort Sill, OK. After his military career, he worked for the Virginia Department of Transportation in Roanoke and The Swann Group, Inc. in Lynchburg. In his later years, he was a loving caregiver for his mother.
Stephen was a gentle soul with a big heart and will be missed deeply. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to family and friends for the many wonderful expressions of sympathy and prayers.
A graveside memorial service will be held at Evergreen Burial Park in Roanoke on Saturday, August 19 at 1:00 p.m.
