Steven Alden Smith, age 80, of Moneta/Smith Mountain Lake, VA and previously of Forest, VA and Hempstead, NY passed away November 26, 2021, in Roanoke, VA. Born in Minneola, NY on January 20, 1941, he is the son of the late Albert J Smith and Doris “Dee” Smith. Steve graduated from Bucknell University in 1962, where he majored in Math and was in ROTC. He received his MBA from Lynchburg College in Lynchburg, VA in 1977. Steve worked at First Colony Life Insurance in Lynchburg from 1969 until his retirement in 2000 where he was the Chief Actuary and a Senior Vice President. He was a member of Smith Mountain Lake Harmoneers. He was also an avid bridge player and attained the highest level of competition as a Life Master. He was also an Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America, having, at the time of attaining his Eagle, earned every merit badge that was available. Steve was a 1st Lieutenant in artillery in the Army from 1962-1964 having been stationed in Colorado, North Carolina, New Jersey, Oklahoma and South Korea (not far from the DMZ). He was married to his wife, Judith “Judy” Ann Smith for more than 43 years. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and family, playing tennis, running, bowling, playing softball and sailing, especially on his sailboat, the “Mist”. He made annual trips to his boyhood summer cottage, Redwood Lodge, in Hamilton, NY on Lake Moraine. He and Judy vacationed together extensively for pleasure and with business. Steve and Judy were members of Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Moneta, VA. He is survived by his wife Judith A Smith, brothers David F Smith (Jo Anne Evans-Smith), Paul G Smith (Margie Smith), sons Steven A Smith II (Jeanne Smith), Chad F Smith (Caren Smith), stepson Michael S Dixon (Michelle Dixon), 8 grandsons and several nephews and nieces. Friends and Family are invited to a celebration of life and Church service that will be held at Bethlehem United Methodist Church at 13586 Old Moneta Road, Moneta, VA 24121 on 12/18 at 2PM.
