Sue Honaker Stephenson

Sue Honaker Stephenson, age 82, of Lynchburg Virginia, died March 1, 2017 She was the wife of the late Dr. John Aldrich Stephenson.

Born in Hinton WVA on June 04, 1934, she was the daughter of the late William F. Honaker and the late Helen S. Honaker.

She is survived by two sons, Graham H.F. Stephenson (Julee) of Columbus, Ohio, and J.S. Taft Stephenson (Cackie) of Wilmington, N.C.; and grandchildren Louise W. and John W.H. II of Wilmington. Sue is predeceased by her eldest son, John W.H. Stephenson in 1984 and her husband, Dr. John Aldrich Stephenson in 1989.

She received her A.B. in Music from Randolph Macon Women’s College in Lynchburg and her Masters in Comparative Literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was by profession a conservator of fine antique furniture.

A native of WVA, Sue traces her mountain heritage back to 1769. She learned the mountaineers’ skills firsthand from her Appalachian grandparents with whom she lived as a child. She was the author of Basketry of the Appalachian Mountains (Van Nostrand Reinhold, 1977) and Rustic Furniture (Litton Educational Publishing Inc., 1979).

The family would like to extend much gratitude to the staff of Runk & Pratt at Liberty Ridge.

The family will receive friends at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday, March 6. A private family memorial will be held in Sandstone, WVA.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lynchburg Humane Society as well as the New Hanover County Humane Society.
