Susan Laura Melnick Custer
Susan Laura Melnick Custer, 66, of Madison Heights, VA, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Tuesday, September 17, 2013, at University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville. She was the loving wife of Ronald Lee Custer for 42 years.
Born November 4, 1946, in Worcester, MA, Susan was a daughter of the late Samuel Melnick and the late Ruth Dame Melnick.
In addition to her husband, Ron, Susan is survived by a son, Brian Lee Custer and his wife, Emilee, a daughter, Stacy Elizabeth Landis, and her husband, Mark, two grandchildren: Briana Lynn Custer and Carlee Noelle Custer; and two sisters: Marilyn Puritz and her husband, Lauren, and Barbara Melnick.
Susan joined the US Air Force in 1968, where she worked in Personnel. While Susan was stationed in Hawaii, she met her husband, Ron, who was also stationed there while serving in the Marine Corps. They married in Hawaii in 1971. Susan surrendered her life to Jesus in 1972. She and her husband started a church in Beaufort, South Carolina. Susan also spent years working in children\"™s ministries, where she shared the love of Jesus with countless children. While loving and caring for her family, Susan also did clerical work at Liberty University (School of Education), College Hill Baptist Church and Lynchburg General Hospital (Admissions). She retired from Lynchburg General Hospital in 2000 when she found out she was in need of a transplant. She faced all of her medical struggles with courage and hope in her Lord. She rejoiced in all of God\"™s blessings in this life and taught those around her to do the same. Susan was a tremendous listener and was always available to share a good hearty laugh with. She was a precious gift from God to all those who knew her and she will be greatly missed.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM on Friday September 27, 2013 at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg. A Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 28, 2013 at Thomas Road Baptist Church, with the Pastor Jonathan Falwell officiating. Interment will follow in Briarwood Memorial Gardens, Amherst, with Pastor Carl Weiser officiating.
