Tamara S. Onken "Tammy"

January 14, 1955 — December 22, 2022

Tamara S. Onken “Tammy” of Bedford, Virginia, passed away on Thursday, December 22, 2022, with her closest friend, brother, and beloved husband at her side.

Born in Washington, Pennsylvania, where she grew up and completed her 4-year degree in Dental Hygiene at West Liberty College in West Virginia.

Shortly after college she took the bold step to move to St. Croix in the U.S Virginia Islands where she took a position as a dental hygienist with one of the few dentists on the island. There she met her future husband when he came in for his annual cleaning. She was never shy with people, by the time he left she managed to get a date and an airplane ride. She did not believe in long engagements and often joked “by the time he came back for his 6-month cleaning we were married.

They spent another year on the island where she was able to fly with her husband to many Caribbean Islands including Nevis where they had their honeymoon. They eventually left St. Croix and found a new home in Lynchburg, Virginia where she took her Virginia boards and worked for numerous dentists in Lynchburg and Hurt. She was the stable rock, working hard, and supporting her husband as he worked to advance his aviation career.

She spent the last 10 years on their small farm in Bedford, Virginia that she so much loved. She got the mountain view that she always wanted and enjoyed her flowers, feeding the birds and driving around the farm with her husband checking cows. She always knew how to make a house a home and always worried about her husband as he traveled.

Tammy is survived by her husband Bruce Onken; brother, August “Richard” Stefkovich (Melissa); sisters, Debbie Stefkovich and Judy Burns; brother-in-law, David Onken, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was always the life at any gatherings and brought so much joy to everyone she met. A celebration of life will be at a later date on the farm in Bedford. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Bedford Memorial Hospital ICU who showed so much compassion to Tammy and the family.
