Terry Babbitt was born October 22, 1948, and died unexpectedly on September 26, 2023. He is survived by Mary, his wife for 54 years. He is also survived by their children Kirsten Romero (husband Jeremiah) of Bandon OR and Clifford Babbitt (wife Jodie and daughter Evelyn) of Chapel Hill, NC. and a brother, Peter Babbitt (wife Lynn) of Punta Gorda, FL.
Terry graduated from VA Tech with a degree in mechanical engineering. He worked as a design engineer for Philip Morris, Inc. in Richmond, VA for 20 years. Afterward he was head of engineering for Belvac Production Machinery in Lynchburg, VA. He loved designing machines and held many patents. He said his job was like playing in a toy factory. Terry retired from Belvac in 2011 after 20 years.
He was former president of the Academy Center of the Arts Board of Trustees in Lynchburg and a dedicated volunteer at the Lynchburg Humane Society where he often transported animals, built dog houses, and put his tools to work on anything else that was needed.
Terry loved his family above everything and took great pleasure in doing things for them and spending time with them. In return he was much loved and will be greatly missed by them; that includes his much loved cats, Cammie and Harry. Terry could fix almost anything; the family called him, Mr. Fixit. Now someone else will have to struggle with changing the batteries in the smoke detectors, doing the heavy lifting, and getting around to all of the household repairs that inevitably occur.
There will be no service at this time. If you wish to actively remember Terry, please consider donating to Lynchburg Humane Society, Miriam’s House, Academy Center of the Arts or another charity of your choice.
Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family.
