Terry Joan Steer – March 26, 1948 – October 13, 2017

Terry Joan Steer made her transition into light on October 13, 2017, after a struggle with pancreatic cancer. Encouraged by peacemaking parents, her passion was supporting liberal ideals such as peace, justice, and understanding. She worked especially diligently for better communication among different faiths, by serving on the Planning Committee of Voices of Faith, a community-based organization that serves to promote dialogue among people of different faiths in the Roanoke Valley, and was a friend to the gay community. Born in Chester, Pa., on March 26, 1948, Terry attended schools in Westchester County, N.Y., and graduated with an AA degree from Westchester Community College in Valhalla, N.Y. Terry worked predominantly with nonprofit organizations and retired from the American Red Cross in 2014. A cradle United Methodist and longtime Episcopalian, she served on various committees at Christ Episcopal Church, including a term on the Vestry and many years as a delegate to the Diocese of Southwestern Virginia Annual Convention, the Diocesan Global Goals Committee, and was a former board member and consistent supporter of the Phoebe Needles Center. Predeceased by her parents, Marjorie and Philip Steer; and stepmother, Mary Kruse Steer; she is survived by her sister, Judy Steer of Louisville, Ky.; and stepbrother, Duncan Kruse (Alison), Brooklyn, NY. She is sorely missed by them and the Barbour family (Barbara, Dennis, Liz, and Sarah), Virginia Burchett, “brother” Terry Steer (Sandy), as well as her Christ Episcopal Church family, and the broader interfaith community of Roanoke, especially the devoted Women’s Faith Club of Hindu, Christian, Muslim, and Jewish friends. A service celebrating her life will be held Saturday, October 21, at 11 a.m., at Christ Episcopal Church, 1101 Franklin Road SW, Roanoke, followed by a reception in the fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Phoebe Needles Center, 732 Turners Creek Road, Callaway, VA 24067.

Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory – Roanoke Chapel is assisting.
