Terry Leon Kopf, 80, of Huddleston, passed away on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at his residence. He was the loving husband of Elaine Kopf.
Born January 1, 1939, in Homestead, Oklahoma, he was the son of the late Arthur and Ada Kopf. He graduated from Canton High School in 1957. Terry joined the United States Air Force in 1959 and proudly served his county through 1963. Terry continued to serve his country as a Communications Officer with the United States Department of State from 1965 to 1989. During his career he was posted to the American embassies in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Saigon, Vietnam; Geneva, Switzerland; Taipei, Taiwan; Sofia, Bulgaria; The Hague, The Netherlands and Mogadishu, Somalia. He also served temporary post assignments in Helsinki, Finland; Beijing, China and Tehran, Iran.
Terry and Elaine met while on assignment in Geneva, Switzerland, and were married May 1, 1970, at the American Church in Geneva, Switzerland.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Kevin R. Kopf of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; his granddaughter, Grace Kopf of Purcellville, Virginia; and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his sisters Ruby Kopf and Genevieve Frewaldt; three brothers, James Kopf, Raymond Kopf and Otto Kopf.
A celebration of Terry’s life will be held from 1:00-3:00 pm on Wednesday, January 23, 2019 at Tharp Funeral Home in Bedford, Virginia. Burial will take place in White Brook Cemetery, Carolina, Rhode Island, at a later date.
The family has requested memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association in lieu of flowers.
