Thelma Oleatha Tanner, 92, of Lynchburg, Virginia, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on December 10, 1932, in Appomattox County to the late John Walter Jackson and Reva Watts Jackson. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Walter Lee, James, and Joe Jackson; her sister, Daisy Louise Anderson; and her great-grandson, Sherman LaQuintas Chambers.
She joined Mt. Shiloh Baptist Church at an early age and remained a devoted member until her health declined. She was honored as the oldest member of the congregation. Her unwavering faith and gentle spirit enriched her community and brought comfort to many in times of need.
Known affectionately as “Foxy TJ” and lovingly called Grandma by countless family and friends, Thelma embodied kindness and a zest for life. She welcomed every soul with an open heart and was celebrated not only for her tender nature but also for her impeccable sense of style. Whether dressing up for church, attending a family gathering, or simply enjoying a day out, Thelma had a unique flair that set her apart. Her love for fashion was evident in every outfit she chose—a true reflection of her vibrant personality and the joy she spread. Always graceful and eternally chic, she never failed to make a statement, inspiring others to celebrate their individuality.
But it wasn’t just her style that left an indelible mark; it was also her quick wit and humor. Whether sharing a hearty laugh or lightening the mood with a memorable one-liner, Thelma’s humor was as legendary as it was endearing. Many will fondly recall her playful quips: “The old grey mare isn't what it used to be,” “I don't have a nickel in that dime,” and “that dog won't hunt.” Delivered with her characteristic warmth, these one-liners perfectly captured her unapologetic spirit and her ability to find laughter even in life's simplest moments.
Along with her passion for fashion and humor, Thelma delighted in music, cooking, traveling, entertaining, and even trying her luck at the casino. One of her favorite pastimes was savoring the bouquet of blooming flowers—a quiet celebration of nature’s beauty. And when the music played, she was always ready to “cut a rug,” letting her spirit shine through every joyful dance.
Thelma leaves behind a cherished family legacy: her daughter, Reva Vanessa Banks (Clarence); her two sons, Fred Tanner and Eric Tanner (Norma) of Lynchburg; her two sisters, Yvonne Gilbert (Isiah) and Maxine Ross of Lynchburg; and her brother-in-law, JR McKinley Tanner of Arlington, Virginia. Her spirit continues in her seven adored grandchildren—Tasha Chambers, Demetria Tanner, Chanel Tanner, Dante Hancock, Niketra Bagby, Alica Tanner, and Eric Tanner—as well as her nine great-grandchildren and countless other relatives and friends whose lives were forever enriched by her presence.
Our heartfelt gratitude goes to the compassionate staff at Heartland Hospice—Lexi, Terry, Jill, and Tarsha—for their devoted care during her final days.
May the memory of Thelma Oleatha Tanner continue to inspire us to embrace life with kindness, elegance, and joyful spontaneity. Her spirit remains forever in our hearts, an eternal beacon guiding us through our own journeys, reminding us to live boldly and beautifully—just as she did.
