Thomas Clayton Harvey, 79, of Lynchburg, VA, went to be with his Lord on Sunday, April 21, 2013 at his home. He was the husband of Elsie Neighbors Harvey for 57 years.
Born Thursday, November 16, 1933 in Campbell County, Thomas was a son of the late Carlton Reeves Harvey and the late Mary Ina Moore Harvey.
In addition to his wife Thomas is survived by a son, Clayton B. Harvey and his fiancée, Debra Carter, of Lynchburg, a daughter, Suzanne H. Velleca, of Lynchburg, six grandchildren: Clayton T. (CT) Harvey, Joseph C. Roberts and fiancée, Nicki Brewer, Brandi R. Harris and her husband, Rusty, Grayson B. Harvey, Brianna and Victoria Eisenhower, all of Lynchburg, a sister Virginia Lee Beale, of Concord and her daughters and their husbands, Kim and Dean Anderson, Rhonda and Jaime English, and a brother, Robert G. Harvey, of Rustburg.
In addition to his parents, Thomas was preceded in death by daughter, Joni L. Harvey, and a grandson, Daniel L. King.
As a young man Thomas loved baseball and was an excellent knuckle ball pitcher. For that he was scouted by the St. Louis Cardinals, but declined their offer. He proudly served his country for 32 years in the Army National Guard. Along with running his own business, Harvey\"™s Grading, for 22 years, he served on the board of directors of the Concord Fire Dept. A man of strong faith, Thomas loved his church, Faith Baptist Church, where he often played bass guitar for the choir. Thomas loved and cherished his family. He was a father figure to his grandchildren. A humble, soft spoken and honest man; Thomas always kept his word and set an example for all to follow.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM on Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg. A celebration of Thomas's life will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory with the Pastor Lee Dittman officiating. Interment will follow in Indian Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery. Military Honors will be provided by American Legion Post 16.
