Rev. Thomas Donnell “Don” Warters, 77, of Lynchburg died on Saturday, July 28, 2018 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Martha Ford Warters for 48 years.
Born on May 6, 1941 in Atlanta, Ga., he was the son of the late Thomas Warters and the late Bernice Donnell Warters. He was a graduate of Grady High School in Atlanta. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in History from Oglethorpe University in Atlanta. He earned a Master of Divinity from Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Ga., and earned a Doctor of Ministry from McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago, Illinois.
In addition to his wife, Don is survived by his children Elizabeth Austin (Bobby), of Willow Spring, N.C., Alissa Warters of Florence, S.C., and Nathan Warters (Danielle) of Williamsburg, Va.; and grandchildren, Nicholas Williams, Landon Williams, Abianne Austin, Jalin Austin and Noelle Warters. He is also survived by a brother, Raymond Warters, of Lemon Grove, Calif. He was preceded in death by a beloved son-in-law, Scott Williams.
Don served Presbyterian Churches in South Carolina, Georgia, and Virginia during his 42 years in the ministry. In his spare time he enjoyed oil and watercolor painting and spending time with his family. He also loved animals, especially his beloved Shetland Sheepdogs. Most recently he and his wife have been volunteers and rescue parents for the Northern Virginia Sheltie Rescue.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 4, 2018 at 2 p.m. at Rivermont Presbyterian Church with Dr. David Weber officiating. Visitation will follow the service.
