Thomas Eugene Johnson, known to his loved ones as Eugene, passed away on July 30, 2023, at the age of 58, in Roanoke, Virginia. Born on June 5, 1965, in Lexington, Virginia, Eugene was a beloved father, brother, and friend, and his presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Eugene’s educational journey included attending Parry McCluer High School and furthering his studies at Virginia Western Community College.
Eugene was a kind and thoughtful individual who deeply cherished his family. He will be remembered for his warm heart and his unwavering love for those around him.
He was diagnosed with stage IV kidney cancer in May of 2010. He lost his wife three years later. During the time since then, he finished raising his three children single-handedly. He met this challenge with a dedicated heart and focused on being there for them. He never failed. God blessed him with 13 years and almost 3 months of time, unheard of with his condition.
Eugene leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. He is survived by his sons, Travis Caldwell and Sam Johnson, and his daughter, Kimberlyn Johnson. Eugene also leaves behind his brother, Walter Leroy Johnson, and his sister, Janet Rebecca Johnson Fix and her husband Robert. Eugene was preceded in death by his wife, Angela Carol Johnson, mother, Alice Thomas Clark, his father, Roy Lee Johnson, his sister, Shirley Delilah Johnson, and his brothers, Bailey Marinello Johnson and William Edward Johnson.
The family plans to have a memorial service at a future time in Roanoke to honor Eugene’s life and celebrate the impact he had on those around him. Further details regarding the service will be shared as they become available. They also wish to thank the many physicians, especially Dr. Daniel, who performed his kidney surgery, Wake Forest Hospital who performed surgery on his hip, as well as his Dr. Heath and his oncology team and the many nurses as well as his many friends and family who shared his life.
His memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
