Thomas Frederick \"Fred\" Powers, 88, of Bedford, died Thursday, July 29, 2010 in Oakwood Manor. Born December 9, 1921 in Bedford County, he was a son of the late Nannie S. Powers and Piercy P. Powers. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, William Page Powers.
Fred was an Army veteran of WWII serving in campaigns in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. He re-enlisted in the Virginia National Guard in 1947, serving for a time as company commander of Company A in Bedford before being transferred to posts in Roanoke and Staunton. He retired in 1981 with the rank of Lt. Colonel. Fred was a member of Bedford Presbyterian Church, and was an avid fisherman and gardener. He enjoyed reading and writing letters. Fred continued to correspond with his fellow veterans until his death.
Fred is survived by his wife of 64 years, Jacqueline Overstreet Powers; three daughters, Cynthia Ann Powers of Richmond, Susan Cecilia Janney and her husband, David of Fredericksburg, and Pamela Joy Powers of Centreville; two grandsons, David Owen Janney, Jr. and Christopher Powers Janney and his wife, Allison all of Fredericksburg; a sister-in-law, Marie Powers of Bedford; a nephew, Bill Powers of Farmville; two great nephews and many other close family and friends and lots of good neighbors.

John T. Salley officiating. American Legion Post #16 will provide military graveside honors. A reception will follow at Bedford Presbyterian Church.
