Thomas Francis Haugan

d. August 26, 2018

As he wished, Tom passed in the warmth of his home with his family by his side, on August 26, 2018. A recent unexpected diagnosis of cancer gave him three weeks to display the great strength and courage his friends and family had long come to know. He was a rock, a firm foundation to his family, and one who did not turn away from acceptance of our short time on earth.

Born to Joseph “Joe” and Honora “Nancy” Haugan in Sheridan, Wyoming on October 17, 1940, Tom there began his journey of living in many different places including most of his youth in Sidney, Nebraska. He graduated from the University of Nebraska with a degree in chemistry, whose concepts he no doubt used in his favorite hobby of cooking. Tom’s first career as an Army officer in the Signal Corps led him to arguably his favorite residence of Germany for ten years as well as to Thailand, Korea, and several states. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel and then worked as a systems analyst.

Tom’s family was the most important part of his life. He married the love of his life, Audrey Talley, in 1977. Their greatest joint achievements were the births of their children Joseph Andrew Haugan of Washington, D.C. and Nan Emily Haugan of Richmond, Virginia.

A memorial service to honor Tom will be held on Thursday, August 30, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home in Lynchburg, with Father Gallagher of St. Thomas More Catholic Church officiating. Visitation will be in the hour preceding. A private burial will follow.

On the last day of his life, Tom requested no flowers, but suggested that anyone so inclined remember him by a donation to a lifelong favorite charity of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Lynchburg Humane Society.

Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family.Condolences may be sent by visiting obituaries.tharpfuneralhome.com.
