Thomas Franklin Gowen

Thomas Franklin Gowen, of Madison Heights died Monday June 18, 2012. He was the devoted husband of Shirley Floyd Gowen for 56 years.

 T.F. was born September 3, 1928 in Nelson County a son of the late Thomas Franklin, Sr. and the late Lola Bryant Gowen and his step-father Melvin Bryant. He honorably served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and then retired from the Public Works with the City of Lynchburg. He was a member of the Hill City Lodge #183, the Scottish Rite, the Shriners, the American Legion Post #104 in Appomattox, and was a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Monroe.

 In addition to his wife he is survived by a daughter-in-law Glenda Gowen-Nixon and her husband Alan of Elon, four sisters: Phyllis Strickler of Monroe, Eleanor Martin of Amherst, Jean Scruggs of Madison Heights, and Othello McAlister of Amherst, and three grandchildren: Nicholas, Justin, and Olivia.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son Steve Kendall Gowen and one sister Barbara Hudson.

 A Celebration of T.F.\"™s Life will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday June 20, 2012 at the First Baptist Church of Monroe with Pastor Glynn Coleman officiating. Interment will follow at Briarwood Memorial Gardens with military honors performed by American Legion Post #16.

The family will receive friends following the committal at the cemetery, back at First Baptist Church of Monroe.
