Thomas Lee Matthews

Thomas Lee Matthews, 73, of Forest, VA, went to be with the Lord at Lynchburg General Hospital, Tuesday, April 05, 2016.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents O. N. Matthews and Meta Duffey Matthews and his brother Bennett Taylor Matthews.

Born April 26, 1942 in Farmville, VA, he graduated from Appomattox County High School with the class of 1961. Tom retired in 2002 as the Building Official for Campbell County.  He was a longtime member of Rivermont Presbyterian Church.

In his younger years, Tom had many passions including family, music, motorcycles, golf, and the outdoors.  He had a strong love for animals, especially for his dog Sam.

Tom is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Robbie Robertson Matthews, and his children and their spouses; Michael Todd and Christina Matthews, Cheryl and Alan Toler, Rodney and Sherry Matthews, and Brett Matthews and Jenny Poore, grandchildren;  Benjamin, Joseph, Jessica, Sarah Katherine, Blake, Kristie, Jeffrey, Jacob, Eleanor, George, Juliet and one great grandchild, Mason.

A celebration of Tom’s life will be held at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 8, 2016 with Pastor Ron Cox officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service and at other times at the Matthews’ home.  The interment will follow the service at Virginia Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to the American Heart Association or Rivermont Presbyterian Church.

Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family.
