Thomas L. Ayers passed away on Friday, October 6, 2017 at the Elks Home/English Meadows in Bedford.
He was born in Bedford County on October 1, 1926 and was the son of the late Everett Ayers and Oakie M. Ayers. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Virgie Mayhew Ayers.
He is survived by a very special Nephew, Jeffrey Krantz of Lynchburg, VA.
Mr. Ayers was retired from Akzo-Nobel Corporation in Roanoke, VA. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the Pacific Theater. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 1264. He was also a member of the American Legion, Post 0003. He was a member of the Bedford Elks Lodge. He was a member of Preston Oaks Church in Roanoke.
Along with his late wife, Mr. Ayers founded the Thomas & Virgie Mayhew Ayers Foundation that benefits a number of charitable causes.. His Nephew, Jeffrey will now take the helm of this foundation.
There will be a graveside service with military honors at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 9, 2017 at the Mayhew Family Cemetery in Moneta, VA. Father James Young will be the officiant. In accordance with Mr. Ayers wish, there will be no visitation.
