Thomas “Tom” Monroe Sandidge, age 96, of Lynchburg, Virginia, passed away on Sunday, August 2, 2015.
He was born on June 3, 1919, in Buena Vista, Virginia, at the residence (now known as Glen Maury) of his grandfather, Thomas Wills. He was the son of the late Nellie Wills Sandidge and the late Cecil Truette Sandidge. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Anderson Sandidge, with whom he was married for 72 years; his brothers, Truette, Warren, Charles, Ronald, and Mosby Brown “M.B.” Sandidge; his sister, Dorothy Sandidge Kidd; and his son-in-law, Lloyd “Pete” Holloran.
Tom is survived by a brother, Richard Sandidge; his sisters, Wanda Sandidge Stone and
Joanne Sandidge McGuire. He also leaves behind his daughter, Patricia Sandidge Holloran, and his son, Phillip Sandidge and his wife, Mary; his grandchildren, Cindy Hedrick Shoemaker and her husband, Paul, Beth Hedrick Boyer and her husband, R.F., Andy Sandidge, and Greg Sandidge and his wife, Rebecca; his great-grandchildren, Madison, Mackensie and Mathew Boyer, Caitlin Shoemaker Riedel, Kirsten and Ian Shoemaker, and Noah Sandidge; his step-grandson, Steve Holloran and his wife, Angie, and his step-great-grandson, Tyler.
Tom served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and retired from Appalachian Power after 42 years of service. He was very involved in the Boonsboro community when it was an agriculture and dairy farm society. Tom was a member of the Boonsboro Ruritan Club for over 50 years, a charter member of the Boonsboro Volunteer Fire Department, and a life-time member of Boonsboro United Methodist Church. Only a few will remember the U.S. Air Force Civil Defense Network observation tower he (with the help of Appalachian Power) built in the 1950’s on the Ruritan property. It was used by the Ground Observer Corps volunteers before the establishment of full radar coverage for the continental U.S. during the height of the Cold War.
An avid gardener, trout fisherman and furniture maker, Tom was always ready to help a neighbor during a time when community members were there to help each other without having to be asked. He will always be remembered as being a hard-working individual who put family first and himself last.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 8th, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Tharp Funeral Home’s Lynchburg Chapel with Reverend Ronald Litten officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery.
