Thomas “Tommy” Raymond Turpin, Jr., 85, passed away on September, 21, 2015. Formerly of Big Island, Va., he was born July 7, 1930, to the late T. Raymond and Louise Turpin.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Jeanie K. Turpin, and his daughter, Sherrie L. Turpin.

Tommy leaves behind his wife, Frances F. Turpin; two children, Connie Harvey (Don) of Roseland, Va., and Thomas “Chip” Raymond Turpin, III (Heather) of Drexel, N.C.; two stepchildren, Tamala C. Nicely (Wayne) of Lexington, Va., and Kevin L. Camper (Crystal) of Roanoke, Va.; six grandchildren, Corinne Causby (Forrest), Justin Harvey (Skye), Mackenzie Nicely, Taylor Nicely, Lyvia Turpin, and Peri Turpin; three great-grandchildren, Shepherd, Colette, and Ephraim Causby; two brothers, William “Billy” Turpin, and James Turpin (Judy); and many nieces and nephews.

Tommy was retired from Georgia Pacific. Prior to his retirement, he served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was very active in the Big Island community in various capacities. He was a charter member of the B. I. Credit Union and the B.I. Emergency Crew. He was a devoted member of Big Island Baptist Church. He also enjoyed working with the Red Cross, Virginia Baptists, and Salvation Army providing disaster relief both in the U.S. and overseas. While working with the Royal Ambassadors (RA’s), Tommy experienced his greatest joy which was working with children. Among all this, he was also the former owner of Green Needles Tree Farm in Coleman Falls, Va.

Even in death, Tom desired to help others by donating his body to science with hopes that more might be learned about dementia.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of choice.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, September 23, 2015 from 6 until 8 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home, 220 Breezewood Dr. Lynchburg, Va. 24502. A celebration of life will be held Thursday, September 24, 2015 at 11 a.m. at Big Island Baptist Church with The Rev. Don Harvey officiating.
