Dr. Thomas Woodruff Stewart, 94, of Lynchburg, Va., went to be with the Lord Sunday, March 27, 2016. He was the loving husband of Selene Carson Stewart.

Thomas was born Tuesday, June 14, 1921 in Pelham, N.Y., a son of the late Thomas Stewart, Sr. and Martha Hall. In 1945, he graduated from Columbia University, N.Y., earning a Medical Degree. He began his career as a medical doctor by proudly serving our country with the U.S. Navy Medical Corps from 1942 until 1950, with his Foreign Service taking place at Guam Naval Hospital in the Marianas Islands. He furthered his medical career and was a valued anesthesiologist at Lynchburg Memorial Hospital, Lynchburg General Hospital, Virginia Baptist Hospital, and lastly, Bedford Hospital, from which he retired. He connected with other medical professionals through the Virginia Society of Anesthesiologists, Medical Society of Virginia, and American Board of Anesthesiology. On June 26, 1954 Thomas married Selene Carson at Court Street Methodist United Methodist Church, of which they were members. Thomas was also a member of the American Legion and the Bedford Country Club.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Samuel Hall Stewart; his son, Thomas Woodruff Stewart, Jr.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Selene Carson Stewart, of Lynchburg, Va.; daughter, Martha Stewart Doolittle, of Austin, Texas; sons, William Carson Stewart and his wife, Carol Welstead Stewart of Glen Allen, Va., Robert Hall Stewart and wife Cleo Sander Stewart; grandchildren, Laura Stewart Doolittle, of Austin, Texas, John Thomas Stewart, Amy Elizabeth Stewart, William Andrew Stewart, Sarah Virginia Stewart, of Glen Allen, Va., Christopher Alan Stewart, of Holly Springs, N.C.; nephews and families of William Stewart, Thomas Stewart, Richard Stewart.

A private family graveside service will be held at Spring Hill Cemetery Saturday, April 2, 2016 with Pastor William Burleigh officiating.
