Thurman Emmett Vaughan, 95 of Forest, Virginia died on Saturday, August 20, 2016.

Born Friday, July 1, 1921 in Independence, Virginia, he was the son of the late Thomas and Mallie Vaughan. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Vaina Hines Vaughan; great grandson, Aiden C. Martin and brother, Burley Vaughan. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1942 until 1945 during World War II. He worked as the store manager of several Southern States Co-Op’s. Thurman was a humble man who enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, especially fishing and spending time with his good friends in the men’s fellowship at Bethany United Methodist Church.

Left to cherish Thurman’s memory are daughter, Rita Harvey (William “Bill”) of Ephrata, Penn.; grandson, Benjamin Kyle Martin (Julie) of Appomattox, Va.; great-granddaughter, Kylie Lynn Martin also of Appomattox; step-grandchildren, Staff Sgt. W. Marshall Harvey (Anita) of Luke Air Force Base, Glendale, AZ.; step great-grandchildren, Cadence Harvey and Braylon Harvey; sisters, Grace V. Phibbs of Galax, Va. and Juanita V. Eastridge of Galax, Va.; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Goode Volunteer Rescue Squad P.O. Box 178 Goode, VA or Altavista American Legion Post 36, P.O. Box 153, Altavista, VA 24517.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, August 22, 2016 at Virginia Memorial Park with Rev. H.O. Tom Thomas officiating. Military Honors will be provided by American Legion Post 36 of Altavista.

Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Bedford, is assisting the family.
