Thurman "Gene" Jones Sr. passed away peacefully at his home on March 31, 2024.
Thurman “Gene” Jones, Sr. was the eldest of seven born to Mary “Murr” Moss in Campbell County. At a young age Gene dedicated his life to Christ and was baptized at Christ Chapel Baptist Church. Gene also attended Peaceful Baptist Church and was later led to and remained is a faithful member to Change Me Ministries as his Ministries were Facilitator, member of the Board of Directors and singing in the choir. Gene attended Campbell County High School and June 1969. Gene courageously served his country in the United States Marine Corp, where he completed duties in Okinawa, Japan and Vietnam. Gene served our community with the Lynchburg Police Department from December 29, 1975, he received many accommodations until he retired January 1, 2001, as a P. O. III. Gene worked for the Lynchburg Sheriff Department, from September 2002 until he retired in November 2009. 1999-2014 Dee & Gene operated D&G's House of Fashion. Gene was a dedicated member of Central Virginia Vans Unlimited (Super Bear was his handle), Clarkstown Community Social Club, Fraternal Order of Police and American Legion. On Easter Sunday March 31, 2024, while resting in his home God called his Good and Faithful Servant to his forever home. Along with his Mother Mary J. Moss awaiting Gene is his father-in-law Frank W. Austin Sr., nephew Shawn Moss and many other family and friends. Leaving to cherish his memory, his wife of 54 years, Delores Jones, Sons, Thurman E. Jones, Jr. and Gerard E. Jones (Tanisha). Granddaughters Ashley Desmond, and Olivia Hendrix, Great-Grandsons Josiah L. Norman, and Johathan Desmond, his mother-in-love Gwendolyn Austin, Brother Victor Moss. Sisters Patrica Braxton, Brenda Moss, Kathy Crawley (Thomas) Sonya Moss, and Lynn Moss. And a host of relatives and friends. Sister-in-law Linda Austin, Brother-in-laws Frank Austin, Jr. George Austin and David Austin.
A service of remembrance will be held at Tree of Life on April 5, 2024, at 3 p.m. Family and friends are kindly invited to attend. An interment will follow at Clarkstown cemetery.
