Velma Jean Smith, age 93, of Lynchburg, VA, died in Lynchburg on March 22nd, 2015 of congestive heart failure. Velma was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years in 2004, Eugene J. Smith.

Velma Jean Smith (Ordiway) was born on 12/4/1921, in Gladwin County, Michigan to John and Vera Oridway. She is preceded in death by her brother Eldon J. Oridway. Velma is survived by her loving sisters Maxine Savage of Flint, Michigan and Doris Law of Hazel Park, Michigan, six nieces and two nephews, 9 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren.

Velma has three children: Thomas E. Smith & wife Joni, living in Dryden, Michigan, Patricia Helen O’Shea, living in Forest, VA and Jeanette A. Wertz & husband Glenn R. Wertz, in Forest, VA.   Grandchildren: Kurt P. Shea & wife Regina, Plainwell, Mi. , Jennifer L. Thomas & husband Peter Thomas in Maple Grove, Mn, Zachary J. Shea & wife Kathleen in Amherst, VA, Leah S. Fairbanks & husband Adam Fairbans in Troy, Mi. Greta Weidenhamer & husband Michael, in Vonore, In. Grant Smith & wife Lauren in Rochester, Mi. and Glenda Smith in Oryden, Mi., Brett R. Wertz & wife Christi and Kelly Workman & husband Christopher Workman of Forest, Va.

28 great grandchildren: Madeline Thomas, Emma Thomas, Vaugh Thomas, Aaron Thomas, Samuel Shea, Isabelle Shea, Cicelia Shea, Bridget Shea, Gianna Shea, Donovan Shea, Wyeth Fairbanks & Helen Fairbanks, Aidan Smith, Gavin Smith, Grady Smith, Gage Smith, Justin Weidenhamer, Cody Weidenhamer, Michael Weidenhamer, & Brianna Weidenhamer, Jackson Shea, Max Shea, Lola Shea, Finn O’Brien, Dominic Wertz, Cameron Wertz and Austin Workman.

Our parents, Velma Jean & Eugene J. Smith were married on October 23, 1942 in Gainesville, Florida while Eugene Smith was enlisted in the USArmy. They lived in Michigan most of their lives and their last place of residence was in Ludington, Michigan on Lake Michigan before their move to Forest, VA in 2000. Velma was an accomplished pianist, seamstress and quilter.

Interment will take place at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery Columbarium where Velma will be placed beside her husband of 62 years Eugene J. Smith, 1st. Lieutenant, US Army Air Corps.

The family of Velma Smith wishes to express their deep appreciation to Centra Hospice who made it easier for family and friends of Velma Smith to enjoy her transition in a familiar and loving environment.
