Vera Dickens Sackett, 100, of Lynchburg, affectionately known as “Hoo-Hoo”, died peacefully Saturday, January 27, 2018 at Westminster Canterbury. She was the wife of the late Henry Moseley Sackett, Jr.
Vera was born March 15, 1917 in Lynchburg a daughter of the late Clem Luck Dickens and Vera Taylor Dickens. She graduated from Randolph Macon Woman’s College where she was the May Queen in 1938. She was a member of the Junior League of Lynchburg, the Lynchburg Garden Club, the Lynchburg Art Club and Oakwood Country Club. Vera loved to travel and was a talented tennis player, an avid gardener and in her later life, an accomplished artist. She was a devoted member of St. John’s Episcopal Church.
She is survived by her two sons, Henry Moseley Sackett, III, and wife Julie, Luck Dickens Sackett and wife Laura, and daughter, Ann S. Harris and husband Bobby, all of Lynchburg, two sisters, Lucky Dickens Oliver and husband David and Laurie Dickens Cecil and husband Mike, her eleven grandchildren: Henry Sackett, IV, and wife Lucy, Dr. Matt Sackett and wife Cathy, Christopher Sackett and wife Drewry, Emily S. Woolwine and husband Roy, Luck Sackett, Jr., Peter Sackett and wife Sherri, Elizabeth S. Stroud and husband Aaron, Keeling H. Pennington and husband Brad, Katie H. Waterworth and husband Chad, Laura H. Morgan and husband John, and Bobby Harris, Jr. and wife Heather, and twenty six great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by two sisters Elizabeth Hughes, and Lloyd Dickens Burton.
A memorial service will be held at 12:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at St. John’s Episcopal Church. The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 30, 2018 at the home of Ann & Bobby Harris.In lieu of flowers please make memorial contributions to St. John’s Episcopal Church, Westminster Canterbury Fellowship Fund, or to the Academy Center of the Arts.
