Viola Kay Grissom Holder passed away on April 23, 2021 at 11:10 am in Lynchburg Virginia, with her family at her side. She was born in Greenup Illinois on Dec 23, 1947. Viola graduated from Maroa Forsyth High School and earned a Diploma from International Bible College, a BS from Southwestern Assembly of God University, and a Masters of Science from The University of North Texas.
Viola was raised on a farm in Illinois, where she and her sisters achieved recording success as a singing trio. They were featured at events with The Speer family, The Oakridge Boys, The Statesmen and others. She played the piano, clarinet, alto and tenor sax. She served as a civil service secretary for the army and then as a secretary and teacher for two decades at Cobb Christian School. Viola was an avid genealogical researcher and was credited with locating and reuniting Jack Holder with his brother Eugene Sr after their 71 year separation as children. She published multiple articles in numerous genealogical societies. Viola entered a second career as a Academic Recorder, an Archivist and University Historian at Southwestern Assemblies of God University in Texas. There she coauthored a biography with historian Bob Burke. Viola published five books of SAGU history.
Amidst her achievements, Viola’s greatest joy came from the love of her family. She is survived by her loving husband Eugene Cole Holder; Daugher & Son-in-law, Letha and Cameron Bishop of Sunset Beach, CA; Son and daughter-in-law, David and Christine Holder of Evington, VA; Grandson & wife, Cole and Julia Bishop of Huntington Beach, CA; Grandchildren Lauren, Trent, Elizabeth, Sarah, and Faith. Sister and Brother in law, Letha and Wes Wuerch of Hawkins, TX; Sister in Law Margaret Grissom of Maroa, IL; and Several Nieces and nephews. Viola was preceded in death by her parents Carl and Alene Grissom, Brother Everett Grissom, Sisters Lela and Velma Grissom.
