Virginia Calloway Johnson

June 22, 1921 — December 6, 2020

Mrs. Virginia Calloway Johnson, 99 years old, departed this life December 6, 2020 at the Carrington Nursing Home in Lynchburg, Virginia. She was the daughter of the late J. Albert and Mary Margaret Calloway of Coleman Falls, Virginia. She was the beloved wife of the late Emory H. Johnson, Sr. In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by her siblings and their spouses, George “Pete”(Pauline), Marcus “Hump” Sr., James “Jim”, L. Addison, and Malcolm “Mack” (Katie), and Olivia C. Williams, a beloved daughter-in-law Shirley S. Johnson.

She is survived by her loving children, Virginia “Mary” Woods of Concord, Virginia, who was her heart, Shirley J. Thornhill of Lynchburg, Virginia, and Emory H. Johnson, Jr. of West Virginia; Her devoted son-in-law Bernard “Ray” Woods; sisters-in-law Odessa Calloway of Bedford, Virginia and Maxine Calloway of Baltimore, Maryland. She is also survived by her devoted grandsons Murrell W. Thornhill, IV (Adrian) of Lynchburg, Virginia and Emory “E.J.” Johnson, III of West Virginia and granddaughter, Nikki McCoy (Rev. Mark); great-grandchildren, Imoni of Atlanta, GA, Tyler of Richmond, VA, and Alexis Thornhill of Lynchburg, VA, who was very devoted to her. She also is survived by a devoted niece, Deborah Calloway and nephew, Marcus Calloway, Jr. (Linda) along with host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was a faithful member of Antioch Baptist Church in Coleman Falls, Virginia until her health failed. She was instrumental in getting the church members, family members and friends of Antioch to donate for the installation of stained-glass windows under the ministry of the late Rev. J. Taylor. She also facilitated sponsorship from local companies for special church projects.  She contributed financially until she was admitted to the nursing home.

She enjoyed opening her home up for softball games and family gatherings for the community.

A celebration of Virginia’s life will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, December 11, 2020, at the Tharp Funeral Home Chapel, Lynchburg. Rev. Daniel Calloway, officiating and Dr. Carl B. Hutcherson, Jr., Eulogist. She will lie in repose, Thursday, December 10th from 12 p.m.- 6 p.m. and also one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at the Antioch Baptist Church, Coleman Falls.

The family would like to express sincere thanks to nephew, Deacon James Calloway (Vanessa) for their visits and prayer with her at the nursing home, to the staff of the Carrington Nursing Home, Lynchburg for their love and compassion displayed during her care, and the Tharp Funeral Home staff.
