Virginia Estherline Campbell Shelton

April 6, 1925 — August 22, 2022

Virginia Estherline Campbell Shelton, age 97 of Roanoke, VA, passed away on August 22, 2022. She was a resident of Hermitage Roanoke for the past eight years.

She was born in Amherst, VA on April 6, 1925, and was the daughter of the late Stanhope Randolph Campbell and Ida Ellen Hamilton Campbell.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 70 years, The Reverend Garry James Shelton; her brother Aubrey Randolph Campbell; and her sister Doris Campbell Johnson.

Virginia is survived by her daughter Joan Shelton Dowdy (Daniel); her son Garry Michael Shelton (Sandy); grandchildren Jason Dowdy (Mary), Benjamin Dowdy (Ann), Lauren Dowdy Puckett (Jacob) Hannah Shelton, and Kirk Dent (Cannady); great grandchildren Nolan Dowdy, Carolina Dowdy, Jane Puckett, Oscar Puckett, Trey Dent, Colt Dent, and Naomi Dent.

After graduating from Amherst County High School, Virginia married Garry Shelton just one week prior to his entry into the United States Army during June of 1944. Upon his return from WWII, Virginia supported Garry while he pursued his undergraduate degree at Lynchburg College and his master’s degree at Duke University. She wholeheartedly served alongside him during his almost 60 years of ministry in the Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church. A dedicated life-long member of the UMC, she was the quintessential minister’s wife of her time maintaining spotless parsonages, playing the piano at church activities, singing in the choir, serving on committees, leading workshops, teaching Sunday School classes, and helping with the settlement of more than 60 refugee families sponsored by the last full-time church Garry served in Hampton, VA. She was a writer and a meticulous keeper of family history notes writing frequently about the Campbells who settled in Virginia in the 1600s.
