Virginia “Ginny” Hopkins, 69, of Amherst passed away at home on Monday, February 16, 2015. She was the wife of Dr. Edward Meeks Hopkins.
Born in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania on November 9, 1945, she was the daughter of the late Mary Evans Cobb and Kenneth Robinson Cobb. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a precious two-year-old grandson, Mitchell Bays Turner, of Charlotte, North Carolina.
Ginny graduated from Seven Hills School, Lynchburg, and attended Lake Erie College in Painesville, Ohio. She later graduated from the Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley School of Professional Nursing.
Ginny spent forty years in the nursing profession and began her nursing career at Duke University Medical Center. She later moved to Richmond where she worked at St. Mary’s Hospital. She spent over thirty-five years at Virginia Baptist Hospital and was a member of the inaugural staff of the Peter W. Houck Neonatal Intensive Care Unit that opened in November of 1972. Many lifetime friendships resulted which were often referred to as her Neo-Natal Family. She also worked in the Newborn Nursery, Pediatrics, and Mother-Baby Unit. She retired in 2007 and began battling her cancer diagnosis.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Frank Lyttle Turner, III and his wife, Meg of Charlotte, North Carolina; a daughter, Ellen Cobb Turner Weaver and her husband, Robert, of Richmond; a stepson, Edward Hunter Hopkins, of Amherst; a stepdaughter, Ann Courtney Hopkins Lewis and her husband, Michael of Leesburg; a precious grandson, Frank Lyttle Turner, IV of Charlotte, North Carolina; a brother, Howard Evans Cobb and his wife, Nell of Manakin-Sabot; two sisters: Mary Cobb Culberson and her husband, Carl, of Sebastopol, California, and Linda Cobb Huggins and her husband, Rick, of Columbia, South Carolina; and three special cousins: John William Cobb, Jr. of Ireland, West Virginia, Eileen Cobb of Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Nancy Cobb of New York, New York. Ginny is also survived by many loving cousins, nieces and nephews; a very special friend, Timmy Christian; and five special grand dogs!
Ginny and her family are very grateful for the compassionate care provided by her medical team, headed by Dr. Dwight S. Oldham, Dr. Anita Hilliard, Dr. Elisha Kucia, Dr. Eugene Wolanski, and Kathy Kennedy. She considered them to be brilliant scientists who were also kind, caring and compassionate physicians. She was also grateful for the kind, caring and compassionate staff at The Alan B. Pearson Cancer Center.
Ginny attended St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Clifford. She was so thankful and grateful for her dear church family and many prayer teams from the east to the west coasts. She was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Amherst which was very instrumental in her spiritual growth.
A memorial service to celebrate Ginny’s life will be held at Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Amherst at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 23, 2015.
