Virginia Tyner died October 17, 2022.
Born December 27, 1919, in Tampa, Florida the first of four children, Virginia was raised in Florida. During World War II, she was employed by the Life Insurance Company of Virginia in Richmond. It was there she met and married Jack Tyner on August 22, 1942. Later locating in Lynchburg.
A member of St. John’s Episcopal Church since 1944, Virginia taught Sunday School and filled various roles as an active member of the Episcopal Women of St. John’s. She was a part of the Book Club and a docent at both the Maier Museum and the Lynchburg Art Club. A highlight of her varied volunteer involvements was reading books to children attending the Day School at St. John’s Episcopal Church.
Jack, her husband of 42 years, died in 1984. Also preceding her in death were a son, John Dale Tyner, and her three siblings. Virginia is survived by two daughters, Barbara Mimms Tyner and Sarah Jo (Sally) Tyner and Barbara’s spouse Candace R. Shultis. Also surviving are a granddaughter, Tyne Martinez and husband Tony, and two great grandchildren, Ella Grace Martinez and Nathaniel Tyner Martinez.
Virginia was known for her keen sense of humor and love of people. A memorial service and celebration of her at life will take place at St. John’s Episcopal Church on Saturday, November 26 at 11:00 am followed by a private committal in the St. John’s Columbarium. Officiating will be Rev. Ben Cowgill and Rev. Dr. Candace R. Shultis. A reception will follow in the Hume Room at Westminster Canterbury.’
