Vivian Jeanette Chaffin Southall, 90, of City View Farm, Lynchburg, departed this life on Sunday, October 30, 2022. She was the loving wife of the late Horton Miller “Pokey” Southall, for over 67 years. Jeanette and Pokey were married September 24, 1950.
Affectionately known as Jeanette, she was born December 1, 1931 in her grandmother’s home which she currently owned and resided. She was a daughter of the late Nelson A. Chaffin and Elizabeth Hubbard Chaffin. She was a member of North Bedford Baptist Church and a retired employee of National Bank Lynchburg after thirty-five years of dedicated service as a Trust Assistant.
Jeanette was educated in the Bedford County School System graduating from Boonsboro High School and Phillips Business College. While continuing her education she received the following honors: Executive Secretarial and Junior Accounting Certificates, American Institute of Banking; Civil Activities and Clubs: Past Member Board of Governors, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority-Beta Gamma and Beta Master, Past President City Council of Beta Sigma Phi. Women of the Year 1989, Business and Professional Women, Co-Contract Chairman of Virginia, The Womens Club of Lynchburg, and Seven Hills Chapter- ANG Needle Guild.
Jeanette enjoyed crafts, canning, pickling, preserving, needlepointing, working in the community nursing homes, helping the under-privileged. She was extremely active at North Bedford Baptist as church Clerk, youth group director, Sunday school teacher, and church organist.
She is survived by a sister, Elizabeth “Betty” Dawn Chaffin and her husband, Eustace Bruce Hardman, their son, Steven Bruce Hardman, and wife Shelli. Their grandson, Chase (Laney) and granddaughter Kinley. Jeanette was preceded in death by her sister Juanita Chaffin Mayberry.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, November 3, 2022, at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, November 4, 2022, at North Bedford Baptist Church with the Pastor James D. Hyden, Jr. officiating
