Walter Elias Loy, Jr. passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 28th at his home at Liberty Ridge in Lynchburg VA with his beloved wife Janet by his side. He was born on October 5, 1933, in Hershey PA to Walter, Sr. and Anna (Mumma) Loy.
Walter graduated as president and valedictorian of his 1951 Palmyra PA High School class. He earned degrees in physics from Muhlenberg College (BS), Drexel University (MS), and Temple University (PhD). After 5 years in the aircraft industry, he was invited to return to Muhlenberg to teach physics where he spent the next 35 years. During that time, he received awards for teaching and service to the College, was elected or appointed to numerous leadership positions, including Acting VP for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College for 1984-1985, and served as head of the Physics Department from 1980 to 1994.
Walter was extremely devoted to his family. With them, he traveled extensively – beginning with camping trips throughout the U.S. and Canada to excursions throughout Europe. His hobbies included genealogy, photography, and carpentry. He loved history and was especially interested in the Reformation and WWII. He and his wife enjoyed wood working, from small craft items to larger building projects including Habitat for Humanity and Lutheran Disaster Response. As a life-long Lutheran, Walter also served on many committees, assisted in worship services, sang in the choir, and led adult classes.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons Walter III of Slatington PA, David (Doreen) of Lynchburg VA, and daughter Cynthia Kalkwarf (Stephen) of Tewksbury MA; grandchildren Nicole Lewis of Dracut MA, Erin Underwood (Richard) of San Antonio TX, Chelsea Bates (Josh) of Erie PA, and Graham Loy (Mason) of Appomattox VA; seven great-grandchildren Seth, Hannah, Avery, Harper, Evan, Hayden, and Xander.
He is also survived by brothers Anthony (Susan) of Harrisburg PA and Kevin of Lawn PA, and sisters Amalie Gingrich of Harrisburg PA and Sandra Summy (Howard) of Allentown PA. He was preceded in death by his sister Annamarie Schmidt.
