Walter Gilmer Carter, Jr.

Walter Gilmer Carter, Jr., 73 of Lynchburg, died on Saturday, May 14, 2016, at Lynchburg General Hospital in Lynchburg, Virginia. He was the husband of Cindy Withers Carter.
Born Tuesday, November 17, 1942 and raised in Bedford, he was a son of the late Walter G. Carter, Sr. and the late Agnes Ruff Carter.
Walter worked at the Georgia Pacific paper mill in Big Island for 43 years where he retired as a supervisor. He served in the U.S. Army, and was a member of New Bethel United Methodist Church in Gladys.
In addition to his wife, Cindy, he is survived by a son, Danny R. Carter and his wife, Trina of Goode; daughters, Melissa C. Davis and her husband, Steve of Radford, and Angela M. Carter of Lynchburg; stepchildren, David Irby and his wife, Jennifer of Locust Grove, Donna Mickles and her husband, Derrick of Rustburg, and Dustin Irby and his wife, Rebecca of Evington; a brother, Danny L. Carter and his wife, Bonnie of Bedford; a sister, Katherine Taylor of Bedford; and 14 grandchildren. He is also survived by the mother of his children, Linda Hudson Carter MacDonald of Lynchburg.
The family would like to thank his caregiver, Michelle Bowles for the care and support she provided.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 17, 2016 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg, 220 Breezewood Drive, Lynchburg, VA 24502.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Tharp Funeral Home, on Wednesday at 11:00 am. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Cemetery, Lynchburg, VA, with military honors by American Legion Post 16.
