Walter Laird Sykes, Jr., 76, of Lynchburg, passed away on Wednesday, May 20, 2015. He was the love of Susan B. Sykes’ life for thirty-five years.
Walter was born on March 14, 1939, in Philadelphia, Penn., to the late Walter Laird Sykes, Sr. and the late Clara Wagner Sykes. As an engineer, Walter worked for FlowServe for over 45 years. He attended Holy Cross Catholic Church in Lynchburg.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his former wife and the mother of his beloved children, Joyce Wonder Sykes.
Left behind to cherish Walter’s memory are his wife, Susan B. Sykes; two children, Kenneth Sykes and his wife, Debra, and Stacey Wood and her husband, Derek; his brother, Ron Sykes and his wife, Patti; six grandchildren, Adam Sykes and his fiancée, Rachel Fritsch, Meg Sykes, Madeline Sykes, Caroline Sykes, Joel Wood, and Simon Wood; his beloved dog, Abbey; and his granddogs, Teddy and Puddles.
A prayer service will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, June 5, 2015, at Holy Cross Catholic Church with Rev. Msgr. J. Kenneth Rush, Jr. and Rev. Earnest Carey officiating. A reception will follow the service.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Walter’s nurse, Elaine Dameron with Centra Hospice, the Centra Cardiologist Group, and his caregiver, Greg Byrum.
