Walter Vest Mahone

Walter Vest Mahone, age 74 of Lynchburg, Virginia, passed away February 17, 2024. He was the son of the late Virginia & Walter W. Mahone, and in addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Patrick O’Conner Mahone. 

Walter is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn Mahone– the love of his life, as he would say, that he married not once, but twice. He had four children, his son Patrick (Melissa), his daughters, Tonya Corriveau (Joe), Stacey Craft (Kendall), Sherry Sale (Alan), and his special adopted son and lifelong friend, Kevin Saunders (Sarah). He had one sister, Kay Derrick (Doug), and one brother, Danny Mahone (Tina). He had nine grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He will also be greatly missed by his best buddy and fur pup, Bodie. 

He served in the Vietnam War, and in a short period of time, he advanced to sergeant. Walter was a very proud U.S. Marine who loved his country. He was the owner of Mahone and Sons Wallcovering and was well known for hanging wallpaper throughout the Lynchburg area. Before retiring, he became a paint contractor and worked on many refurbished hotels and homes where he loved to engage in amicable conversation with his customers. 

He was well known in the Lynchburg community, and as he became ill, many of his friends and family came and sat to visit and reminisce with him– a truly loving contribution to him in his final days. He also came to know Jesus Christ as his Lord and Saviour as he became sick. Walter knew he would walk with his mother, and one day, would be there to meet his loving family at the gates of Heaven when they enter. 

We want to thank Deborah, Charmaine, and Kara for their loving care for Walter in his last days. They made life easier for us all and kept Walter comfortable. We would like to thank Nayer Hospice Care.

 A Celebration of Life for Walter will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, in the Chapel at Tharp Funeral Home 220 Breezewood Drive, Lynchburg. 

His loving son, Patrick, will deliver his eulogy. Inurnment will follow at the Craft Family Cemetery, 1138 Tabernacle Lane Forest, VA 24551 with military honors.
