Walter “Ray” Shields, 84, of Lynchburg, Va. stepped into the presence of his Lord and Savior Monday morning, December 18, 2017.
Ray was born on June 7, 1933 in Parkersburg, WV, the son of the late Walter and Ethel Shields. He was preceded in death by Pearl Ault Shields, his wife of 62 years; four sisters: Ival Spiker, Doris Liang, Elaine Bennett, and Shirley Bell; and brother “Bill” Shields.
Ray is survived by his daughter Cyndie Tucker and husband, Jim of Lynchburg, Va., and his son Wally Shields and wife, Wendy of Forest, Va.; five grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren; and a brother Cecil Shields and wife, Katie of Parkersburg, WV.
During his lifetime, Ray was employed by the United States Government working as a Chief Test Engineer with the Department of Defense both in Long Beach, CA and in Norfolk, Va., where he received many commendations for his work benefiting our country. Currently, Ray volunteered at the Centra Pulmonary Rehabilitation Center and was very active in the Young at Heart Senior Adult ministry at Heritage Baptist Church.
Ray considered his greatest accomplishment in life was accepting Jesus Christ as his Savior and living a life worthy of His calling. Throughout the years, Ray modeled a life of service that has impacted many spiritually. He will be greatly missed.
A memorial service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, December 29, 2017, in the Chapel at Heritage Baptist Church with Dr. Gerald Kroll officiating.
