Walter Turner Gross, 89, of Bedford, Virginia passed away on Monday, October 2, 2023. Walter was born on September 14, 1934, in Bedford County, Virginia. He was the son of the late Austin John Gross and Margaret Moseley Gross.
He was a member of Yellow Brach Baptist Church and was the 32nd degree Mason. He was a postman for over 20 years and owned and operated Gross’s Orchard along with his son Ronnie. He was eager to greet people as they visited the Orchard store.
Walter is survived by his loving wife, Beverly Slusser Gross; children, Ronald “Ronnie” Lee Gross and wife, Janie Mantooth, Linda Ann Fowler, Kathy Jean Barger and husband, Brian; stepsons, Jonathan Hollie and James Hollie, three grandchildren and three step-grandchildren; brother, Austin John Gross, Jr.; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded death by his first wife Dorothy Michael Gross.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Bedford Life Saving Crew at 311 Bedford Ave, Bedford, VA, or Big Island Emergency Crew at 10961 Lee Jackson Hwy/PO Box 343 Big Island, VA 24526.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 3, 2023, from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm at Tharp Funeral Home, Bedford. A graveside service will be conducted at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, at Greenwood Cemetery with Rev. Tim Wilde officiating. Family and friends will gather at the Apple Valley Community Center, 6785 Wheats Valley Rd. Bedford, Virginia 24523. after the graveside service.
