Warren Calvin Falwell

Warren Calvin Falwell, 90, of Lynchburg, died on Saturday, August 20, 2011, at Lynchburg General Hospital with his family by his side. He and his beloved wife, Doris Ore Falwell, had just celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary on Wednesday, August 17, 2011.

Born October 14, 1920, in Campbell County, Virginia, he was the son of the late Charles Warren Falwell and Etta Tanner Falwell. He was a charter member of Chestnut Hill Baptist Church and a frequent visitor at Thomas Road Baptist Church founded by his first cousin, the late Rev. Jerry Falwell.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his three sons, Charles W. Falwell (Barbara "B"), Terry W. Falwell (Barbara) and David C. Falwell (Shirley), all of Lynchburg, former daughter-in-law, Glenda Falwell Fishpaw; his brother, Lawrence W. Falwell (Jean), sister, Edna F. Twiddy (Pee Wee); and grandchildren, Sherri Falwell McMillion (Larry), Charles (Chuck) W. Falwell, Jr. (Andrea), Christopher W. Falwell (Cheri), Shelly Blake (David), Tracey Falwell Marshall (Jerry), Melanie Falwell Kesler (Chris), Tyler W. Falwell, Brianna Falwell, M. Craig Falwell (Sally) and 13 great-grandchildren.

Calvin was involved in numerous activities and ventures throughout Central Virginia. He and his brother Lawrence started Falwell Airport in 1946 as well as Truck Body Corporation and Falwell Well Corporation in 1947. In 1957, he helped found the Lynchburg Little League and in 1962 brought Minor League Baseball to Lynchburg. In 2004, Lynchburg City Stadium was renamed Calvin Falwell Field at Lynchburg City Stadium. Calvin was also inducted into the Virginia Aviation Hall of Fame in 1986. He received numerous awards during his career and was proud to serve with the Salvation Army, Virginia Baptist Hospital, as a past president of the Lynchburg Sports Club and the Fort Hill Lions Club, as Chairman of the Lynchburg Baseball Corporation, a member of several Major/Minor League Baseball Committees, an honorary member of The Boys and Girls Club, and part of many other organizations throughout the Southeast. His infectious laugh, generosity and passion for life will be missed by all.

The family will receive friends beginning at 11:00 AM on Wednesday August 24th, at Thomas Road Baptist Church, followed by a Celebration of Life at 12:30 PM with Rev. Jonathan Falwell and Rev. Randy Bower officiating. A private burial will follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Salvation Army of Lynchburg, PO Box 2314, Lynchburg, VA.
