September 14, 1924 \"" December 10, 2012
Every morning after breakfast he read the newspaper and checked to make sure he was not in the obituary. Once assured his death had not been announced, his blue eyes would sparkle and with a grin he would say, \"Well, I guess I ain\"™t dead yet.\" Then he would tackle the day\"™s crossword puzzle. On Monday morning, December 10, 2012, our father, Wayland Rudolph Davis, passed away. The newspaper, the day\"™s crossword puzzle blank, lay on his chair.
Our mother, Dorothy Driskill Davis, his wife of 62 years, preceded him in death. We, his children James Wayland Davis and wife Judy, Kaye Davis Culberson, and Susan Davis Faulconer and husband Charles, will miss him. He will also be missed by his 6 grandchildren, Jeremy, Jeff, Joby, Josh, Emily and Laura, 5 great-grandchildren, Carly, Megan, Pressley, Marrin and Adeline Rose, his last surviving brother and 5 sisters, many other family members and countless friends.
Our challenge will be to follow his example. Love for God and family, commitment to personal responsibility and accountability, spirit of generosity, never ending sense of humor, and the high value he placed on education built the foundation from which his children soared. He watched proudly as his wife and children accepted their college degrees. His children watched proudly as he accepted his high school diploma at the age of 82.
We loved his strong and capable hands. Those hands could build a house, mend a fence, fix a car, a bicycle, a jet fighter or a doll, make pancakes with homemade syrup, serve up a fine banana puddin\"™, hug the suffering, swing a laughing child into the air, cradle an infant, hang lights on a Christmas tree, and turn the pages of his well-worn Bible.
Did he get it all 100% right? He would be the first to tell you that he did not. He would also show you it was okay when you didn\"™t either, and that he knew God had a plan for that.
It is with deep sadness that we say goodbye to our father and equally deep gratitude that we acknowledge the loving care provided by the staff at The Summit and his oncologist, Dr. Cecilia McCallum and her staff. His children also thank Pastor Charles Olivieri, a true and faithful servant, and Lenae Byers, a lovely young Liberty University student, whose regular visits brightened his days. Visits from family and friends sustained him and we thank all who took the time to do that, sometimes travelling great distances just to show him they cared. We also wish to thank Tharp Funeral Home and especially our father\"™s nephew, Buddy Maxey, who gentled our journey through this difficult time, by caring for our father with compassionate love and the utmost respect.
