Wilbur Stevens Metcalf, Jr.

Wilbur Stevens “Bill” Metcalf, Jr., 96, loving and beloved husband of Jacqueline Mattox “Jackie” Metcalf, passed away on Wednesday, August 21, 2014, in Lynchburg, VA.

Born in Johnson City, TN, on April 11, 1918, he was the son of Wilbur Stevens Metcalf and Anne Louise Morrisette Metcalf. A sister, Margaret Gordon Nelson, predeceased him.

Bill grew up in Washington, D.C., graduated from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, VA, and served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1941 to 1945; reaching the rank of Captain in the 17th Airborne Division in the European theater of operations during the Ardennes, Rhineland and Central European campaigns.

Following the war, Bill returned to Washington and Lee to attend Law School. He met his True Love, Jackie, a senior at Madison College, and they were married in Gretna, VA, on September 7, 1946.

In addition to his wife, Bill has four wonderful children who survive him: Michael Stevens Metcalf, and wife, Mary Ann, of Camp Hill, PA; Laura Metcalf Rhodes, of Richmond, VA; Richard Hodges Metcalf, of Albuquerque, NM; and Robert Gordon Metcalf, and wife, Vera Kingeekuk Metcalf, of Nome, AK. Also surviving Bill are three grandchildren: Christopher Garverick, and wife, Lori, of Powhatan, VA; Mattox A. Metcalf, and wife, Barbara, of Anchorage, AK; and Prescott W. Metcalf, and wife, Alexis, of St. Petersburg, FL; and six great-grandchildren.

Bill was a Special Agent with The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for 22 years. He was the Agent in Charge of the Pennsylvania Crime Commission for 5 years and then worked as a practicing attorney in Harrisburg, PA, until his retirement in 1985.

Bill was a Master Mason, a member of the Military Order of World Wars, and was active in the Lions Club. He also served on the City Council in Leymone, PA and, as a former scout, enjoyed volunteering for the Boy Scouts of America. He and Jackie were members of Quaker Memorial Presbyterian Church.

Bill and Jackie first retired to Keowee Key, SC, then to Bedford, VA, in 1989, and then to Lynchburg in 1995. He and his bride had over 68 wonderful and loving years together.

A Memorial Service and inurnment in Gretna, VA will be announced at a later date.
