Willard Roy Hutcherson, 97, of Lynchburg died on Saturday, November 17, 2018, at Autumn Care of Altavista. He was married to the late Kathryn Starky Hutcherson for 68 years.
Willard was born in Renan, Virginia on May 14, 1921. He was a son of the late John Douglas Hutcherson and Mamie Moon Hutcherson. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his son Michael Willard Hutcherson; a daughter-in-law, Linda West Hutcherson; four brothers, Melvin, Carlton, Herbert, and Paul Hutcherson; and three sisters, Madeline Hutcherson Thompson, Margaret H. Shotwell and Louise H. Cardwell.
He is survived by his son David Roy Hutcherson and fiancée, Lisa; grandson, Dave Hutcherson and wife Shirley; three great-grandchildren, Haley, Hannah and Tyler Hutcherson, all of Renan.
Willard joined the Navy in November, 1942 and was honorably discharged in 1945. He returned to the farm as a tobacco and cattle farmer until which time he moved to Lynchburg and went to USDA Tobacco Grading School. After becoming a USDA Tobacco Grader in 1970, he traveled from Virginia to Florida and back to Ohio and Kentucky on the Berley Market until retiring in 1995.
He was a former member of Straightstone Baptist Church in Renan. He became a member of Beulah Baptist Church after moving to Lynchburg.
A funeral service will be conducted at1:00 p.m. on Friday, November 23, 2018 in the Chapel of Tharp Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Dennis Hollandsworth officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior. Interment will immediately follow the service in Fort Hill Memorial Park. Military honors will be provided by American Legion Alta Vista Memorial Post 36.
