William A. “Bill” Leftwich, Jr., 91, of Madison Heights, died Friday, March 29, 2019. Bill was preceded in death by his first wife Charlotte Gooch Leftwich, his second wife Nancy Gallaher Leftwich and his step-daughter Edith Gallaher.
Bill was born in Bedford County, Va. on July 13, 1927 to the late William A. Leftwich, Sr. and the late Mary Elett Leftwich. Upon graduation from New London Academy in 1945, Bill joined the U.S. Navy and served in both WWII and the Korean War. After his discharge he was employed as a railway mail clerk until 1960 at which time he became a rural mail carrier in Madison Heights, Va. He retired from mail service in 1982 and devoted the rest of his years to his family and his love of cattle farming.
Bill was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, father-in-law, and is survived by his four children: Diane Gryctko (Michael), Marcia Sutler (“W.B.”), James Leftwich (Sue) and Rebecca Leftwich; step-children, Tom Gallaher (Susan), Sue Wax (Marvin) and David Gallaher; grandchildren, Brandon Sutler (Rachael), Susan Silhan (Stephen), Mary Gwendolyn Gryctko (Kyle Blythe), Lauren Gryctko and Aaron Benson; great-grandchildren, Oliver Sutler, Penelope Sutler, Charlotte Silhan and Samantha Silhan.
A visitation for family and friends will be held on Tuesday, April 2, 2019 from 5-7 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home, Madison Heights. A private family celebration of Bill’s life will be held at a later date.
