Alan Smith, Jr., 82, passed away on February 23, 2023. He was born on November 3, 1940, in Charlottesville,Virginia and grew up in Lynchburg.
After completing his service in the U.S. Army where he was stationed mainly in Germany, Alan graduated from Lynchburg College and the University of Richmond Law School. He then returned to Lynchburg where he began his career as an attorney. Shortly thereafter, Alan met the love of his life, Mary Ann, on a blind date and they were married in 1975.
In addition to his general law practice, Alan served as a substitute judge and ultimately as a Trustee in Bankruptcy, a role in which he served with distinction for many years. He was frequently consulted by other attorneys for his bankruptcy expertise. Alan retired from his legal career in 2002. He was an avid reader and collector of books, and a great student of history, serving as a member of the Jones Memorial Library board and spending many hours volunteering his services to that organization. In his retirement he also was an active volunteer with the Lynchburg Democratic Committee.
Alan was predeceased by his wife Mary Ann. He is survived by his stepdaughter Jenna Harrell and his sister Jeanne Smith Robinson and their children.
He requested that no memorial service be held.
