William Alexander Carrington Jr.

William Alexander “Sandy” Carrington, Jr., of Lynchburg, VA, born on July 12, 1943, passed away peacefully in his sleep on September 7, 2023, after enjoying 80 years of robust life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Alexander Carrington, and Norvell Nicholas Carrington; his beloved son William Alexander “Alex” Carrington III; his wife of 27 years, Mary “Meg” Callaham Carrington; and his younger brother, Robert “Roger” Carrington (Anne), of California, and cousins Jaqueline “Jackie” Ambler Phelps Schmid, and Aubrey “Tony” Eaton Harvey.

He leaves behind his daughter, Catherine “Katie” Carrington Oliver (Brandon); his sisters, Martha “Marty” Carrington Smith (Jerry); Anne Carrington Crowder (Bruce); and Mary Carrington Bice (David), together with cousins, Helen Craighill Nicholas, Harrison Trent Nicholas (Lulan), Richard Fielding Stone (Jeanie), and Edley Stone Ramsey. He is survived by nieces and nephews: Michelle Bice Norton (Matt); David Byron Bice, Jr. (Lara); Erin Crowder Hare (Jim); Carson Crowder Miller (Matt); William “Billy” Burnett Smith; Robert “Bobby” Cabell Smith; Philip Ambler Smith (Megan).

Sandy was a graduate of Elon College in 1970. He went on to have a career in insurance sales, retiring from Scott Insurance. Sandy was a champion for his community throughout his life. He was President and founding board member of the Free Clinic of Central Virginia, and President (1988-1990) and board member of the YMCA of Central Virginia, serving on the Executive and finance committees from the 1970’s until his death. He also served admirably on the boards of the Kiwanis Club, PTA/PTO Thrift Shop, and Oakwood Country Club. A talented tennis player, the sport was integral to his life, leading him to be influential in helping bring the CVITT to OCC and drawing strong players from around the country to play in Lynchburg. During his time in the U.S. Navy, he served as a communications radioman on a ship stationed in the Gulf of Tonkin during the Vietnam War. He served in church at St. Paul’s as head usher for years, as well as serving on the Vestry.

A memorial service will be held at 12 p.m. on  September 29, 2023, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 605 Clay Street, Lynchburg, VA. A reception will follow at Sandy’s home.
