William (Bill) Raymond Ball, Sr., age 88, a former resident of Evington, died peacefully at 5:15 am, Saturday, December 5th, at the William M. Dunlap Center for Caring (Hospice Home), in Raleigh, North Carolina. His last days were filled with tender and loving moments with family and caregivers.

Bill was born in Frankfort, New York, the son of Raymond Seymour Ball and Ruth Widrig Ball. He attended Frankfort Public Schools, Morrisville Technical Institute at Morrisville, New York, and Utica College at Utica, New York.

Bill was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 64 years, Anne Damon Ball, and is survived by four sons, William Ball, Jr., and his wife, Linda, of San Antonio, Texas, the Reverend John Ball, and wife, Linda, of Drayden, Maryland, Ted Ball, and wife, Tanya, of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Kevin Ball, and wife, Lynn, of Wake Forest, North Carolina. Bill is also survived by nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

He served in Italy with the United States Army’s 88th Infantry during World War II, and as a reservist, was called back to duty during the Korean conflict. Bill joined General Electric Company, and completed their Financial Management Program, after which, he held various positions in Finance and Marketing, including Manager of Contract Administration. Bill retired after 37 years of service to General Electric.

Bill grew up in the Methodist Church and after marrying Anne, became a Roman Catholic; however, he never lost his love for his Protestant roots, especially the old-time Gospel hymns he so often sang, recalling the words and tunes by heart.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 9th, at 2:00 pm, in the Chapel of the Old City Cemetery, 401 Taylor St, Lynchburg, VA 24501. His ashes will be spread in the Scatter Garden next to the Chapel, where Anne’s remains have been resting for the last six years.
