William “Bill” Sellars, Sr.

William \"Bill\" Sellars passed away at home in Moneta, Virginia on Thursday, May 23, 2013 at the age of 78. Bill is predeceased by his parents, Blake and Lamar Sellars. Bill is survived by Shirley, his loving wife of 57 years.

Bill was born on April 9, 1935 in Pauline, South Carolina. He graduated from Petersburg High School and received a degree in Civil Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1960. He served in the US Army in the Petersburg, VA area where he met Shirley Faye Williams. The couple married and lived in Blacksburg, VA, and Gallipolis, OH before coming to Roanoke, VA. In 1969, they moved to a historic farm, circa 1810, in Moneta. It was affectionately known as The Old Brick.

Bill is also survived by his six children, Kathy (Steve) Brashear of Earlysville, Bill (Gayle) Sellars, Jr. of Roanoke, Leigh Anne Craghead of Roanoke, Susan (James) Dolinar of Lynchburg, Angela (Frank) Terry of Moneta and David (Mary-Evelyn) Sellars of Hardy. He had 10 grandchildren — Sarah (PJ), Laura, Mark, Carrie, John, Hallie, Alec, Madeline, Erica-Blake and Luke \"" and 2 great grandchildren — Asher and Declan. He is also survived by his sister, Jo Anne (Jim) Keeley of Brevard, NC.

Bill retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) as the District Bridge Engineer in Lynchburg in 1995. After VDOT, he worked for Schwartz & Associates, Consulting Engineers in Lynchburg, before finally retiring to enjoy life on the farm with his family and two chocolate labs. He was an avid woodworker and shared his Old Brick crafts with family and many friends. Bill was a member of Beaverdam Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher.

The funeral service will be held at Beaverdam Baptist Church, 10665 Stewartsville Road, Vinton, VA on Sunday, May 26, 2013 at 3:00 pm with the Reverend Dennis E. Moore officiating. The family will receive friends at Beaverdam at 2:00 pm prior to the service. A private burial service will be held later. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations in Bill\"™s name to the Roanoke Rescue Mission, P.O. Box 11525, Roanoke, VA 24022. The family would like to thank Dr. Matthew Skelton and the staff of the Blue Ridge Cancer Center as well as Bedford Hospice Care for their wonderful care.
