William “Ed” Morris, Sr.

Mr. William Edwin \"Ed\" Morris Sr. passed away peacefully on August 13, 2012 at Runk and Pratt Retirement Village in Hardy, VA. He was born in Section, AL in 1924 and spent his formative years in the Red Bank/Chattanooga area of Tennessee with 2 older brothers and an older sister. He was a celebrated baseball player, Golden Gloves boxer and an avid outdoorsman in his youth.   During World War II, he enlisted in the Navy at the age of 18. He served in the European Theater as a radio operator on a Landing Craft Infantry and after the war he went to flight school to become a pilot in the Navy.

After his military service, he continued his education by enrolling at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. He transferred to the University of Georgia at Athens receiving a degree in Forestry in 1950. During his senior year, he married his sweetheart, Grace Clark, of Savannah, GA. Upon graduation he started a 33.5 year career with International Paper Company focusing on timber management and procurement while working in several areas of Eastern NC. He maintained long term residences in New Bern, Sneads Ferry, and Lake Waccamaw until 2002 when he and Grace moved to Eden, NC to be near family for health reasons.

After 55 years of marriage he lost his wife, Grace, to cancer in 2002 but remained in Eden with his son, Rusty, and his family. In 2008, he moved to Smith Mountain Lake, VA to be near his son\"™s new residence and remained there until his death. He is survived by his son Dr. William Edwin \"Rusty\" Morris, Jr. and wife, Nollie, as well as his daughter Elizabeth Royden \"Roy\" Montgomery. He also leaves behind 4 grandchildren, Leiza Lewis, Hunter Morris, Clark Morris and wife Michelle, and Sterling Morris. He was expecting his first great grandchild at the time of his death.

Reverend Summer Bower will lead a celebratory service at Lake Waccamaw Presbyterian Church on Saturday, August 18, 2012 at noon, followed by a reception in the Fellowship Hall. The family requests that no flowers be sent but contributions may be made to: Lake Waccamaw Presbyterian Church (301 Church Street, PO Box 150, Lake Waccamaw, NC 28450) or the charity of your choice.
