Dr. William Edward “Bill” Painter, age 85, of Lynchburg, died surrounded by family on May 18, 2016 following a brief illness. He was born in Mt. Holly, N.C., the son of the late Isla Culp Painter and Egbert Leroy “Ed” Painter. He was also predeceased by younger sister, Barbara Ann Taylor, and a nephew, William Taylor.

Bill attended Duke University where he received BA and MD degrees. His post graduate training was at Bowman Gray School of Medicine. He then received a Commission in the U.S. Air Force and performed distinguished service at military hospitals in London, England and March Air Force base in Calif. During his three-year service in London, he was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal for outstanding professional service.

While stationed in Calif., he met his future wife, Karen. Following his Air Force honorable discharge as Major, the couple married in 1967, and lived briefly in Baltimore. There, he served as Assistant Professor of Radiology at Johns Hopkins.

In July 1967, the couple moved to Lynchburg. Bill was a founding member and a partner in Radiology Consultants until his retirement in 1997. He loved his medical practice and was made a Fellow of the American College of Radiology. He was licensed to practice medicine, surgery, radiology and nuclear medicine. He served on the Boards of several prominent Lynchburg organizations, including the Miller Home, Greater Lynchburg Community Trust, Virginia Baptist Hospital, Williams Home, Adult Care Center and was a charter member of the Board of Directors of Centra Health.

He is survived by his loving wife and their three children, Amy Lee Painter, Emily Ann Painter, and William E. “Rusty” Painter, Jr., wife Carrie; two grandsons, William and Benjamin. A great animal lover, he also leaves behind his faithful dog, Josh.

This gentle, kind and loving man enjoyed flying, boating, hunting, golf, tennis and gardening. He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He served on the Board of Trustees at Peakland Baptist Church where his ashes will be interred in a private ceremony.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the organization of

your choice. The family would like to thank the staff of Westminster Canterbury, Lynchburg General Pulmonary Unit and Virginia Baptist Hospice for their loving and competent care.

The family will host a reception in the Hume Room at Westminster Canterbury on Friday, May 27, from 2:30 until 4:30 p.m.
