William G. “Bill”Long, 83, of Lynchburg died Wednesday May 21, 2014. He was the devoted husband of Lynore R. Long for 52 years.

Bill was born January 21, 1931 in Harmon, Illinois the son of the late Willard Long and the late Grace Morrissey Long. Bill was a graduate of the University of Illinois where he earned his Masters’degree in Ceramic Engineering. He was a parishioner of Holy Cross Catholic Church.

Bill was preceded in death by four brothers, Herb, Leroy, Dennis, and Eddie Long.

In addition to his wife he is survived by his three sons: Brian Long and his wife Kelly of Blacksburg, Kevin Long of Los Angeles and Darren Long of Lynchburg; granddaughters Elizabeth Long of Blacksburg and Morelli Payne of Columbia SC; and six siblings: Jane Michel, Mary Knudten, Geraldine DeLost, Eileen Glaser, Joseph Long and John Long and numerous nieces and nephews, and a special group of caring friends.

Bill worked for 30 years as a Research Engineer with Babcock & Wilcox on Mt. Athos and during his career received patents for improving existing products as well as inventing new ones.

Bill had a passion for education and served three terms on the Lynchburg City School Board, ending his service as the Chairman of the Board.

The National Society of Professional Engineers named him ‘Engineer Of The Year’in 1983. He served on the Board of Directors for ‘Central Virginia Community Services’from January 1985 – December 1990.

Bill edited the Society For The Advancement of Materials and Process Engineering (SAMPE) Quarterly Journal for over 25 years.

He was instrumental in developing the White Rock Center’s After School Tutorial, developed the Wood Ministry, was on the board of Lynchburg Sheltered Industries, the board of the ARC of Central Virginia, the board of“Astride with Pride” with“Christmas in April,” and served on the board of Lynchburg Covenant Fellowship.

His pet project became caring for the grounds, trails, and lake at Camp Kum-ba-yah along with his dear friend Bev Cosby. Nestled in the woods of the Camp, the lake now bears his name.

Bill was also involved with the National Association for Christians and Jews, and Knights of Columbus.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday May 29, 2014 at Tharp Funeral Home Lynchburg.

A Memorial Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday May 30, 2014 at Holy Cross Catholic Church with Monsignor J. Kenneth Rush as celebrant, reception to follow. Interment will take place in Illinois at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lynchburg Sheltered Industries, (lsiworks.org), Lynchburg Daily Bread, (lynchburgdailybread.com) or to Camp Kum-ba-yah, (campkumbayah.org). All have ‘donation’tabs on their websites.
