William Hodges "Billy" Payne

December 13, 1954 — January 29, 2018

William Hodges Payne, “Billy” or “Bill”, age 63, of Lynchburg, died in his sleep on Monday, January 29, 2018. He was born to Mary John Moore Payne and Leonard Kimball Payne, Jr. on December 13, 1954 at Virginia Baptist Hospital in Lynchburg.

Billy was a 1973 graduate of Lexington High School and a 1977 graduate of Campbell University with a B.S. in Geology. After graduation, he worked for ExLog in Houston, Texas as a surface logger on oil wells both on land and in the Gulf of Mexico. Later, he worked for Baker Hughes Inteq in oil and gas exploration. Billy also worked in sales in insurance, securities, mutual funds, and real estate in the Houston area. He returned to Virginia to work for Johnstone Supply and later Aireco Supply, in Manassas. Most recently, he was the Manager of the Lynchburg Branch of Aireco Supply, Inc.

Billy is survived by his mother; his brother, Kimball Payne (Leslie) of Lynchburg; his sister, Tazewell Rinehart (Phil) of Virginia Beach; and a brother, John Payne (Kathleen) of Reedville. He was adored by eight nieces and nephews; and eight great-nieces and nephews, who knew him as the “greatest uncle” (his words) who always brought them flowers. He is also survived by his step-children, Whitney Austin and Wesley Taylor; his step-grandchild, Amy Jo Taylor, all of Brookshire, Texas; and his close friend, Kathy Barbour of Buies Creek, N.C.

Billy was predeceased by his father; his aunt, Anne Hodges Moore of Lynchburg; and his uncle, William Muse Moore, III of Lynchburg, for whom he was named.

A funeral mass, with Father Jim Gallagher officiating, will be held at Holy Cross Catholic Church, at 11:00 a.m., Monday, February 12, 2018, with a reception following at the church. Interment will be in the Presbyterian Cemetery in Lynchburg.

Billy’s oldest niece, Helen, who named her son “Will” after him, described him as, “…gentle, loving, loyal, and genuine, a true gentleman, my uncle, and most importantly, my friend.” Everyone who knew him, from Texas to N.C. and Va., would agree.
