William Lee “Bill” Winfrey, 93, of Lynchburg, died Friday July 5, 2019.  He was the husband of the late Lois Whittington Winfrey for over 50 years who passed away on April 6, 2000. 

Bill was born April 30, 1926, in Roanoke, Va., a son of the late Harry S. and Mabel Wells Winfrey of Roanoke and Newport News.  Bill attended Andrew Lewis High School, Salem, Va., and graduated from Hampton High School in 1944.  He served our country during World War II in the U.S. Army Air Corps during 1944 – 1945.  Following the war he attended the Engineering School at The University of Virginia during 1946 – 1949. 

He was employed with C&P Telephone (Bell Atlantic and Verizon) during 1950 – 1989 as Engineer Assistant in Newport News, as Field Engineer in Leesburg, and as Field Engineer and Engineer Manager in Lynchburg from September 1959 until his retirement in December 1989. 

Bill and his wife, Lois, were past members of Leesburg Baptist Church of Leesburg and Memorial Christian Church of Lynchburg.  They considered themselves life-long Christians and were grateful to God for their many blessings and loving family.  Bill was baptized at First Christian Church in Salem, Va., and he and Lois were married in The University of Virginia Chapel on June 11, 1949.  Since April 2003, Bill has attended Blue Ridge Community Church, Lynchburg. 

Bill is survived by two sons, Tom and James, both of Lynchburg; a daughter, Diana “Dino” Dean of Timberville, Va.; four grandchildren, Brian “Walt” Winfrey and his wife Lindsey of Lynchburg, Jonathan Dean of Harrisburg, Katie Dean and her husband Mike Drake of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Tyler Winfrey of Lancaster, Pa.; two great-grandchildren, William “Xander” Winfrey and Katherine Winfrey; and one brother, Melvin “Bucky” Winfrey and his wife Carolyn of Tampa, Fla. 

He was preceded in death in 1999 by his oldest brother, Sam Winfrey of Newport News, Va.; one son, Robert Winfrey of Lancaster, Pa., in 2007; and his only sister, Emily W. Colombo of Hampton, Va., in 2008. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, 2215 Park Avenue, Lynchburg, VA 24501, or Blue Ridge Community Church, 2361 New London Road, Forest, VA 24551.
